Labor Day weekend in Savannah does not have to mean choosing between spending the entire weekend downtown or heading straight to the beach.
In 2026, the long weekend runs from Friday, September 4 through Monday, September 7, and the Savannah area has a little bit of everything planned: live music on Tybee Island, local makers downtown, coastal science on Skidaway Island, Savannah history, ghost tours and a special Labor Day opening at Pin Point Heritage Museum.
That variety is actually one of the things I enjoy about living here.
You can spend part of the day learning about coastal Georgia on Skidaway Island, head downtown for dinner, walk through one of Savannah's historic places and finish the weekend at the beach without ever turning the holiday into a major road trip.
Here are some of the events and activities worth knowing about for Labor Day weekend 2026 in Savannah and the surrounding area.

Start the Weekend With a Little Coastal Science
Dock Discovery - Friday, September 4
If you are looking for something different from the usual holiday-weekend event, Dock Discovery is scheduled for Friday afternoon at the UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island.
The program runs from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. and gives participants a chance to investigate the marine life living beneath Georgia's floating docks. Participants collect organisms from the Skidaway River and use microscopes to examine animals from our tidal waters.
Registration is required, the program is designed for ages 8 and older, and the current cost is $15 per person, including aquarium admission. Children under 18 must attend with a registered adult.
This one stands out to me because it is very Savannah without being touristy in the traditional sense.
Living in coastal Georgia means marshes, tidal creeks, rivers and estuaries become part of everyday geography. An activity like this gives both visitors and newer residents a much better sense of the environment surrounding Savannah.
It would also be an easy Friday outing to combine with some time on Skidaway Island before heading somewhere else for dinner.
Explore Savannah's History at Bonaventure
Legacy & Labor: Labor Day Weekend at Bonaventure - September 4–7
Bonaventure Cemetery is one of Savannah's most recognizable historic places, and a special Legacy & Labor walking-tour series is scheduled throughout Labor Day weekend.
The tours focus on the builders, industrialists, artists and working people whose stories became part of Savannah's history.
Current event information lists tours at 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Friday through Monday, with each tour lasting approximately two hours.
If you have never been to Bonaventure, the holiday weekend is a good excuse to finally go.
One practical suggestion: choose one of the morning times if you can.
Early September in Savannah can still feel very much like summer, and a shaded morning walk beneath the live oaks is usually going to be more comfortable than a mid-afternoon tour.
Advance reservations are a good idea, and I would still confirm your exact tour time directly when booking.
Lean Into Savannah's Haunted Side
Labor Day Weekend Ghost Tours - Friday and Saturday
Savannah ghost tours are definitely not reserved for October.
Special Labor Day Weekend Ghost Tours are scheduled for Friday, September 4 and Saturday, September 5 from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m., beginning at 1 East Broughton Street.
The tours focus on Savannah's darker history, local legends and documented hauntings. Advance booking is required, and current admission is listed at $32–$36.
This could make an easy evening option if you spend the afternoon exploring downtown, have dinner and want something distinctly Savannah afterward.
It is also one of those activities that works whether you fully believe Savannah's ghost stories or simply enjoy the history and storytelling that comes with them.
Spend Friday or Saturday Night on Tybee With Jimmy Buffett Music
Sons of Sailors - September 4 and 5
If your ideal Labor Day weekend sounds more like island music than ghost stories, Tybee has another option.
Sons of Sailors: A Jimmy Buffett Tribute is scheduled for two nights at the Tybee Post Theater, with performances beginning at 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The weekend is designed around two different versions of the show: a more relaxed acoustic experience followed by a higher-energy full-band Buffett celebration on Saturday night.
The two-night format feels very appropriate for Tybee: a little laid-back island music one evening and more of a full beach-party atmosphere the next.
And if you are already planning to spend part of Labor Day weekend on the island, Sunday brings Tybee's larger holiday celebration.
Shop Local Saturday Night
Downtown Handmade Night Market - Saturday, September 5
For something downtown that does not revolve around a formal tour or ticketed show, the Downtown Handmade Night Market is scheduled for Saturday evening from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at 33 Barnard Street, near Ellis Square and City Market.
The market features local and regional artists and makers with jewelry, pottery, art, glass, candles, textiles, home décor, accessories, gifts and other handmade items.
I like this addition to the Labor Day calendar because it gives you a reason to spend part of the evening downtown without needing a complicated plan.
Walk the squares, have dinner, stop through the market and continue toward City Market or River Street afterward if you feel like staying out.
It is also a good reminder that Savannah's lifestyle is not only the major festivals people see advertised from out of town. Smaller local markets, art events and neighborhood activities are a big part of what is happening throughout the year.
The Big Labor Day Weekend Event: Tybee Beach Bash
Sunday, September 6
If there is one event likely to feel like the unofficial end-of-summer celebration, this is it.
The Tybee Island Labor Day Beach Bash is scheduled at the Tybee Island Pier & Pavilion on Sunday, September 6, with the primary evening event running from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Visit Tybee currently lists the event as a free, family-friendly beachfront concert followed by fireworks, and Georgia DNR's permit for the beach event also identifies Sunday, September 6 as the event date.
There is one scheduling wrinkle worth knowing: the City of Tybee Island's calendar currently displays the Beach Bash across September 5–6 and includes additional Saturday-night information. Because the current official sources are not completely aligned, I would plan around the Sunday evening concert and fireworks and double-check the City's calendar before heading out for any Saturday Beach Bash programming.
If you only choose one major event for the weekend, Sunday night's combination of beach, music and fireworks is probably the obvious pick.
But I would not wait until 6:45 p.m. to decide to drive to Tybee.
A Very Important Tybee Labor Day Tip: Plan the Parking
Holiday weekends are busy on Tybee.
Paid parking is enforced across the island from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. year-round, including weekends and holidays.
The current hourly parking rate is $4 per hour. Tybee also offers a $25 daily parking pass, which can be purchased for as many as seven consecutive days and selected in advance.
For the Beach Bash, I would plan to:
- Arrive well before the evening concert.
- Carpool if possible.
- Expect heavier traffic on U.S. 80.
- Give yourself additional time leaving the island after the fireworks.
This is one of those occasions where a little planning makes the difference between a fun Tybee day and spending half the evening looking for somewhere to put the car.
Spend Labor Day at Pin Point Heritage Museum
Special Open Day - Monday, September 7
If you want something more relaxed on Labor Day itself, Pin Point Heritage Museum is opening specially on Monday, September 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The museum occupies the former A.S. Varn & Son Oyster and Crab Factory and tells the story of Savannah's Pin Point community and its Gullah-Geechee heritage.
Current admission for the special Labor Day opening is $15 for adults and $7 for children ages 3–12.
I particularly like this as a Monday option.
It is local, historically significant and completely different from spending another day downtown or at the beach.
Pin Point is one of those places that can deepen your understanding of Savannah substantially. The area's history is not confined to the squares and buildings downtown. Coastal communities, waterways, fishing, crabbing and Gullah-Geechee culture are also fundamental parts of Savannah's story.
If You Want a Simple Labor Day Weekend Itinerary
You certainly do not need to attend everything.
In fact, I think Savannah is more enjoyable when you leave some room between activities.
A fairly easy long-weekend plan could look something like this:
Friday
Start with Dock Discovery on Skidaway Island if you have children or enjoy coastal science.
Head home or back to your hotel, change, then choose either a downtown ghost tour or Sons of Sailors on Tybee.
Saturday
Keep the morning open.
Spend some time downtown during the afternoon, have dinner and stop by the Downtown Handmade Night Market.
Or make Saturday your first Tybee evening and head to the Tybee Post Theater for the full-band Sons of Sailors show.
Sunday
This is the day I would reserve for Tybee if the weather cooperates.
Go earlier than you normally would.
Have a beach day, eat somewhere on the island and stay for the evening Beach Bash concert and fireworks at the pier.
Monday
Slow it down.
Visit Pin Point Heritage Museum during its special Labor Day hours, have lunch and leave the rest of the afternoon open.
After three days of Savannah in September, you may appreciate not having another full itinerary.
What If You Would Rather Skip the Events?
That works too.
One of the advantages of a long weekend in Savannah is that you do not need a ticketed event to fill it.
You could just as easily build the weekend around:
- An early walk through Forsyth Park
- Brunch downtown
- A drive to Isle of Hope
- A beach morning on Tybee
- Walking River Street
- Exploring the squares
- Visiting a museum
- Spending time along the marsh
- Trying a restaurant you have been meaning to visit
- Taking the boat out if coastal weather cooperates
- Simply enjoying an extra day at home
Not every holiday needs an agenda.
What Labor Day Weekend Shows You About Living in Savannah
For someone considering relocating to Savannah, holiday weekends can actually tell you quite a bit about the area.
Within the same long weekend, you can choose between an Atlantic beach, a marine-science program on Skidaway Island, Savannah history at Bonaventure, Gullah-Geechee history at Pin Point, a downtown makers market and live music.
Those places are all part of the same Greater Savannah lifestyle, but they feel very different.
That is one reason I encourage relocation buyers to explore outside whichever neighborhood happens to be on their original list.
Living in Savannah can mean historic-city life.
It can mean island life.
It can mean spending Saturday downtown and Sunday evening watching fireworks from Tybee.
It can mean living nowhere near downtown but still having all of those choices available when you want them.
That variety is part of understanding whether Savannah fits the life you are looking for.
